True, that chances of getting shot are slim. But I don't know about...
walking anywhere by himself and being completely "safe". He might not get shot, but getting mugged and/or robbed and just being harassed by some teenage punks in general are definitely in the cards. Anywhere south of Lawrence and east of Mcowan, you're taking your chances.
Anyone getting mugged/robbed/raped are statistically unlikely given the size of the city's population, but all I'm trying to say is use your better judgement. Just why take the chance if you don't necesarily have to?

It's fine. Just don't drive by Yonge & Finch. I, er, someone might steal your wheels! ;)
You're probably in the safest part of Toronto, if not the top 5. Don't worry about it. There are a few of us (i.e. me, Hemants, Tgr_clw) that are within a 3 minute drive of where you're staying.
