How bad is Friday Traffic on 400 from Toronto to Barrie?

You can take sideroads to avoid some of the headaches, but...
See your username is NY, I can safely assume you do not know the roads well.
As the others have said, 3pm-6pm is murderous. I used to commute from Toronto Area to Barrie every day, and it was not fun. Even going opposite to rush hour traffic, it was a crappy drive.

6:30 north of Hwy 9 it starts to get better but still packed all the way to hwy 11...
... its the same on Sunday afternoons heading back anytime after 1pm.
