Mr. Lube ...

First - this isn't for the Audi, but when checking the hours for the stores in Edmonton I ended up checking the price list and Edmonton has the highest cost for a synthetic oil change $72.99 (It use to be less than $50 when they had bulk synthetic). Just annoying - not the money, the principle of it - we refine the oil down the street.
Oh well - one day I may go back to changing it myself ...

http://www.mrlube.com/section.cfm?section_id=24</a

Last time I went to Mr.Lube for an oil change (and I do mean "last" time) they diconnected the intake hose at the throttle body (why - I don't know) and never re-clamped it after putting it back. It came off during driving a couple of days later and I lost all power while accelerating.
Mr. Lube and similar chains spend all their money on fancy storefronts and advertising, while employing teenagers at min. wage to actually perform the work.

like overtightening the oil drain plug to strip the threads (you won't know it until the next oil change), forgeting to put new oil into the crankcase after draining...
In short I would never go to places like that.
As for synthetic oil price, if you buy your own oil, prices should the the same (or very similar) everywhere.

I wouldn't trust them with anything else (they really try and push everything from tranny flushes, gas additives, wiper blades ...). It's also a Grand Prix, so nothing they shouldn't of see before. I've also always gone to the same one and the manager runs the shop pretty well and keeps the juvenile delinquents in order.
When I was in Ontario I did have the fun experience of a quick lube shop breaking the end of the dip stick in a previous car which required the dealer to extract ...

I asked if they could change the oil to the A6 and the 911 and the teenager and his buddy were like "sure man if there is a plug I can change the oil".. That made me run and never even try again.
In Alberta the oil change labour has a flat rate so just find a shop, even the dealership will charge the same as the minute lube or Mr. lube or even Canadian Tire.
Do you really need synthetic? Since we change the oil twice or more in Alberta then regular should be perfect. It's better to change the oil more often than a long use of any synthetic.

with the recent oil sludge issue on 1.8t's the Audi/VW has acknowledged. But you're right on normally aspirated engines, dino oil should be sufficient, but then using synthetic doesn't hurt either as it helps starting when it's -25oC outside.

an oil change, got home and noticed the oil was dripping. Took it back to get and they fixed it. Checked the oil when I got home and it was slightly dirty. Kinda of like they didn't change the oil filter even though they charged me for one.

...now because the dealer or any other shops will charge you $60 CDN minimum. I bought a case of Bardahl 5W40 synthetic for $72 and it will do 3 oil changed. I also changed oil every 8000 Km.
Do your own oil change and save some $$$$. Try this www.motrlube.com website, they are in your area.
