in the new Scirocco which isn't coming to NA. This is not new technology. Lancia used this set up in the 70's.
I cannot see Audi developing new mechanical supercharging on their bigger engines when their tried and true turbo technology is so good.
However, mechanical supercharging does have its advantages especially at low boost pressures and low rpm.

I think a lot of agree that the 4.2 V8 needs to be replaced.... it's nice and such, but it's a horrible gas pig.
Now imagine a 4.0TFSI being hopped up for an RS....

It's easier to slap a turbine in the exhaust system, but SCs are more efficient w. less lag.

Yes you still need power to make power with a SC while turbochargers just uses the wasted energy from exhaust.
I don't think Audi would be that stupid to use superchargers if it didn't make sense from both a cost and efficiency perspective.
I can see that for modders, turbocharger would be preferred as it's just a simple ECU upgrade.

mod friendly. In my opinion if they use super chargers only in the engine it will be for their bottom line.

Yep, look at the 2.7T. A lot of blown turbos. People that didn't really care for their cars would go wide open throttle when the engine hasn't even warmed up. I recall reading a post where this one guy kept on coming back for new turbos because of that. THough I know guys with modded 2.7T and have had pretty good reliability because of the proper care.

From an efficiency POV, turbo is the way to go. But it's more complex due to extra plumbing, thermal/cooling issues and use of high temp materials, hence the reliability issues.
SC is much more simple, you only deal with the intake end of the engine, thus should be more reliable. However the supercharger itself can use up quite a bit of engine HP to spin up, thus making it less efficient.
