understand that it's not just my box that's a pain in the *** to open and close; seems to be a b6 thing.
(too much resistance in the hinge makes it stiff to open, and I have to slam the b@#$ch twice usually to get it latched)
Is there a trick to making the door a little more functional?

I remember I took apart the whole glove box to pass a wire from the headunit to an iPod and once that part was disconnected from the glove box, the thing opened up freely.

Yeah I had the same symptoms; I found that the latch wasn't engaging because the hinge-piston thing was preventing proper closure.
I also thought replacing a defective part with another part that is defective in design wasn't going to fix it, but it did.
I think it wasn't terribly expensive... maybe < $40, but I'd have to check my records on that one too.
