Default Problem starting the car last night....after a mis-start, it's like I had no fuel

I went to pull the car into the garage last night and you know how sometimes you don't hold the key long enough in the start position for it to catch and start the car?

Well last night that happened so I figured no biggie and just went to start it again but the car wouldn't start. The battery was fine and was cranking the starter but the car would just sit there and crank and crank instead of firing up. This went on for a good 30 seconds before finally it stumbled itself awake and started.

The tank is full but the car was acting as if there was no gas left??? After I pulled into the garage, I smelt gasoline. There are no leaks though.

The car has 91,000 kms on it and I believe it's still on the original fuel filter. This morning it started 3 times perfectly as long as I started it on the first try.

Any ideas? I posted on B5 S4 forum but haven't got any replies yet.

Default Maybe something is interfering with the pickup in the gas tank itself? Can the VAG

tell you what the fuel pressure is? If you are getting normal fuel pressure, perhaps an injector is dirty.

Default This happened to me

i thought maybe by turning the key and not starting it the first time, it may have slightly flooded the engine? Let it sit for 5 minutes then it started up no problem.

i had a problem similar to this - it turned out to be the engine coolant temperature sensor.

Default My tech says that he never replaces fuel filters ...

that it could a number of things such as loose injector connectors (apparently 2.7t are famous for that), bad spark/ignition control box, bad injector, crap fuel, etc.

Default I'd guess fuel pump also, check the pressure

I know fuel pressure is much more finicky on the FSI engines on startup but not sure if it's the same or not with the non-FSI engines.

Default 2nd...engine coolant temperature sensor

My cars a 1.8t but yes the same symptoms, hard start up and rough idle. Either that or you just flooded your engine by not fully starting it up the first time.

Default I had an issue once similar and it was due to crap fuel. Had issues aside from starting though.

I changed my fuel filter at 100K, worth it for the piece of mind as its not too costly.
