Well here's what we did in that space. We welded a 1/8" thick steel plate so that the down brace could be welded on to them.

Rear main hoop and its attachment point on the floor just ahead of the rear seat position. Another 1/8" thick steel plate was used to secure it to the chassis.

Side shot of the forward part of the main hoop. Notice Audi's own internal cross side brace (shiny black) that sits within the dash area. It is a rectangular box that makes the total width of the car and it is very solid. No wonder these cars are safe.

sounds silly... but watch for....
when you're welding in those plates, be aware of what's behind the metal you're welding to.
I dropped the fuel tank on the scirocco rally car, and discovered the previous owner, when they had the cage built, hadn't bothered to remove the fuel breather/vent tubes... welding the reinforcement plate inside the car for the rear reinforcement had actually melted these tubes on one side!

I think this picture helps explain my rusting A pillar...
<center><img src="http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/mlab601/CAR-RollCage-Dec2007011.jpg"></center><p>... where you can see the rivets used to hold the black piece to the body. I'm getting rust showing right where this rivet is.

oh yeah...you should set the meeting for lease insepection and videotape it!
it would almost be like Jackass Johnny Knoxville returning the rental car "when i drink i black out!" then post it on Youtube...
