Default What does 'Notchy' mean ?

I have heard reports that the 6 speed manual on the A5, 2.0 TSFI (and A4 which has the same transmission, I am told) feels 'notchy'. I am wondering what that might really mean - 1) difficult to find the so-called "H" slot where the stick needs to travel to engage the next gear?, OR 2) the difficulty/hesitation and extra push needed to move the stick through the neutral area, and past the synchronizer to arrive in the next gear?

Have any of you experienced a problem with notchy shifts in an Audi manual transmission?

"Notchy" refers to the mechanical feel when you select and deselect gears. Audi's with longitudinal gearboxes have notchy ger changes because the linkage is direct and the gearbox is pretty stoutly built.

It does not mean that the gearbox is difficult to shift just that the feel of the gears changing is pretty direct and can be felt through the shifter.

I find the B5 S4 gearbox very smooth when fully warmed up and only notchy when cold.

Transverse gearboxes like the TT or the A3 should not feel notchy because the linkage is remote.
