Betty was put to rest at 9:25AM EST today.
My Mom and Brother went to the Vet early to spend some time with her. Mom said Betty perked up when she saw them. She was in rough shape. Mom held her head and as Betty licked her hand, told her how much we loved her and that she can rest now. That she was a good dog and we will miss her very much. When my Mom told Betty that I missed her, I wish I could have been there today to let her go. This is something I am going to have to deal with over time. Mom kept Betty's tags and collar and put them in her empty bowl. Betty's sister Veronica sniffed at them and in some way understood she was gone.
The tumor had kept her from eating normally as well as affected her mobility the past few weeks. She was very thin by now except for her huge belly. The Vet determined the tumor was cancerous and Betty didn't have much more time before it burst.
Veronica is going in for a grooming and check up later this month. Hopefully she comes back with a clean bill of health.

I know some of you have had to lose your pet, well now it seems to be my turn.
After lunch, I got a call from my Mom about one of our dogs, Betty. She is at the vet and cannot use her hind legs or control her bladder. Vet thinks it could be spinal or a tumor. I am having the vet shoot an x-ray and may perform steroid therapy on Betty to she if anything helps. This also gets us a stay at the vet so my Mom doesn't have to miss work to watch her and clean up any mess.
3 hours later the Vet calls me with the findings of the x-ray. Betty has a tumor in her abdomen about the size of a basket ball. Could be her liver or spleen. My idea of driving home this Friday to say goodbye cannot wait. So my Mom and Brother will be putting Betty to rest Wednesday afternoon.
This is very hard and brings back memories of what we had to do for our Beagle about 12 years ago. Betty is resting comfortably, I hope she can enjoy her last night just for a little while. I wish I was there so I can take her to the woods where she and her sister Veronica liked to run. Just so she can smell her playground one last time.
Not her best photo.
