Alboreto died Wednesday in an Audi R8

Re: Actually, he's got an even bigger following from his Formula 1 days
In a tenuous sort of way, Alboreto had a local connection.
Alboreto teamed with Steffan Johansson (sometime driver for the Bettenhausen CART team, originally based in Tinley Park, IL) to win the 1997 24 Heures du Mans driving a Joest Porsche.
That's about as tenuous a connection I'd care to entertain. Bettenhausen has been based out of Indianapolis for years now, and Johansson has probably never set foot in Tinley Park, but we South Siders have always considered the Bettenhausen Team to be the "local boys".
I never met Alboreto or even had the chance to watch him drive. I did however watch his R8 go through it's tech inspection at Sebring in 2000. I am truly sorry I didn't make time to stay and watch the race. All in all, he was my "Audi Guy". I have no idea why, but while watching the T.V. I found myself rooting for Alboreto in the same way I used to root for A.J. Foyt or Dan Gurney when I was a child.
