Anyone know the penalty of having an unregistered car?
The issue:
I bought the 912 here in IL last month (its approaching 30 days).
I live in Ohio (work here) so that is where I need/have-to to register the car. Ohio will not give a title/plates without seeing the car and verifying the VIN in person, because it has an out of state title.
I don't plan on taking the car back to Ohio until the polishing and other minor work is done.. Probably end of Sept.
I need to drive it to/from the shop and ultimately to Ohio.. All 30+ days past the bill of sale date.
Questions:
What is the penalty for getting caught with no plate, and no registration? I have a perfectly good excuse and would be OK with paying a $100 ticket for no-registration if I did get caught on the way down.. but I'm afraid they'll impound the car or its a moving violation.
And... Will IL issue me a temp tag to drive it to OH? Ohio said they might, but getting to a DMV office M-F in Ohio is rough for me.
Thanks!

I mistakenly let my registration sticker lapse a few years ago. IIRC, it was a $70 slap on the wrist
Insurance is (obviously?) the more important thing. Once you get out of Illinois, I can't imagine having any trouble with the paper plates and the drive through Illinois will be, what, 45 minutes? I'd take my chances and, in the meantime, have your story ready to tell.

I dont have paper plates, even...
So its obvious that something is up.. although I've been driving around Crystal Lake with no issues, and I had a cop behind me once. Whacky.

In IL you can go to the DMV and get a "drive away" tag for about 20$
It will give you 5 days to get you to your destination. I bought one and took it with me to Ohio when I picke up my car from the seller there and then drove back to IL. You just need to have the temp to drive to Ohio and you'll be fine.

well...
it's been known to happen that a set of valid plates are put on a car to drive it home.... and if pulled over, the transfer hasn't happened in the computer yet is all... but odds are good no reason to pull over if driving speed limit (in other words, obey all traffic regulations regardless of what others around you do and you should be o.k.)
I drove from CT to chicago on a valid plate from another car... reason being is I flew out on a saturday and CT DMV wasn't open until tuesday.. no way I was going to wait until tuesday to get a temporary plate to drive home!
I drove the speed limit and all was fine.. no problems Hartford, CT to Chicago
