Default Autobahn South Track - Turn by Turn (long & First pass with lots of bad grammar)

Enjoy! I sure hope you are signed up!!! I just started typing and this is what happened. Sorry for the spelling errors and grammar mistakes.

Autobahn Country Club - South track turn by turn

With 15 turns and 2.1 miles long, the South Track at Autobahn Country Club (ABCC) is challenging, fast and technical. After you run a few laps at a slower speed, one aspect of the track which becomes quickly apparent is the lack of any visual references. At speed, as you head down the main straight, your braking zone will be a few car lengths after pit-out on the left hand side. Keep your car to the left side of the track but be mindful of the pit exit as this can be a potentially dangerous situation if the pit marshal accidentally allows a car on the track at the same time as you are approaching your braking area.

Turn 1 and turn 2 to the right are taken almost as one long turn. A late apex into turn 1 followed by a slightly late apex into 2 sets you up very nicely for turn 3. Remember, as you exit turn 2, you will want to be as far to the right as you can. Use your right wheels to brush the curbing on the right. Within a few car lengths after the curb on the right, start your turn-in for the left hand turn of turn 3. Most cars will benefit from either briefly breathing the throttle or a slight tap of the brake before your turn-in. Turn three is one place on the South Track where and early apex may result in horrible consequences. The track-out for turn 3 has very little run off area and the Armco standing right in front of you (yes, the Armco still has it's silvery sheen - lets keep it that way).

As you exit turn 3, you will probably want to up-shift to the next gear as most cars will run out of RPM's. Keeping to the right, watch for the braking markers on the right. Like turn 3, in order to settle the car, you will need to tap the brake very slightly. Most cars will tap the brake between the #2 and #1 marker. Turn 4 is one of the fastest turns on the South track. When you start your turn-in, feel free to brush your left wheels on the very large gently graduated curb. Unlike other curbs on the track, this curb will not rip your wheels off. Left hand turn 4 can also be taken a lot faster than you think (thusly the reason you only need to tap the brake) as the turn is slightly up hill and slightly positively cambered near the track-out.

Tracking out of turn 4, you will want to stay as far right as you can. Your speed will continue to grow as you approach the left hand turn 5; this is the fastest turn on the track. Again, like turn 3 and 4, you will want to slightly tap the brake to settle the car. Like the prior corner, between the #2 and #1 marker seems to be the right place for a brake tap. This turn is deceivingly fast and with the track being 40' wide, it is very wise to use every inch. Making this right hand sweeping turn can be very "puckering" the first few times. As your speed through this corner increases, you will notice that there are some very small changes in the pavement that can work to your advantage and disadvantage. I have been through this corner many times and from my experimentation, if you apex the corner in the middle and barley brush the curb, your left wheels will become slightly light and you risk going all the way around. If you apex this corner in the middle and are 2-4' away from the curb, your rear wheels will not want to break away as easily as brushing the curb. Don't be any further than ~4' from the curb or else you will run out of track-out pavement (not a good place to go off).

Once you have used the entire track out area to the right of turn 5, you will want to quickly make your way to the left hand side of the track. The visual reference to set-up turn 6 is the #1 braking marker. Drive straight for this marker, heavy braking and a quick downshift, and then start your turn-in to the right. This turn is longer than you think with the initial part of the turn is almost non-existent (because of your turn-in point) and the exit run off curbing is a progressive curbing. This means, the bumps on the curb start very gradual at the bottom and the top of the curb is violent at best. Stay off the top of this curb. You will bend a wheel or four.

As you exit turn 6, you will be carrying enough speed to up-shift. If you feel that your car will run out of RPM's before the kink (turn 7) up-shift before the kink. You don't want to shift in the middle of the turn. As you approach turn 8, you will be carrying a significant amount of speed, so make a mental note where you start your braking. On the left hand side of the track, a quick downshift is needed before you start your right hand turn for turn 8. is a little more than a 90 degree turn, so a slightly late apex will properly set you up for turn 9, another right hand turn.

Turn 9 (also known as patience), requires a lot of "patience". This right hand turn is one of the few turns where you absolutely need to execute it with a very late apex. If you don't, there is no good way to make the left hand turn 10. As you exit turn 9, make sure that you stay as far to the right as possible. Turn 10 is a left hand turn which also should be taken with a fairly late apex. The curbing at the exit of turn 10 is just like the curbing at turn 6. Progressive. Don't use these curbs too much, they will bend your wheels. As you exit turn 10, this is a good time to check the gauges in your car, up-shift, adjust your belts and wait for turn 11. At appx 1800' long and nicknamed "viper alley", this is the longest straight on the track (North or South).

Like turn 8, pay attention to your braking markers. The setup for turn 11 is on the left hand side of the track. Heavy braking and a quick downshift, start your turn-in to the right for a slightly late apex followed by a very fast transition to the left for turn 12. This turn can be taken at mid-turn apex or even a little early as there is a ton of track-out that you can use. Make a mental note of the braking area going into turn 13 and like turns 3, 4 and 5, slightly tap the brake to settle the car, accelerate and start your turn-in to the right.

Turn 13, 14 are a long right hand sweeping turn. Make sure that after you apex 13, your car is as far to the left as possible. This turn can be quite scary if you run off on the grass as the Armco will quickly greet you. As you continue through to turn 14, use the smooth curbing on the right hand side of the track. Turn 15 really doesn't exist, so just point your car down the middle of the track and head back to turn.

Too many "brake" remarks.

We can work on the downshifting, if you like.
