How do you choose an engine oil?

and has done a fantastic job of "selling" their specs and oils to the enthusiast sites. For example, the new Mobil 1 "Extended Life" formula is no longer a suitable oil for air cooled Porsches because they changed the additive package but Mobil didn't tell anyone that until valve guides started failing prematurely. Brad Penn has the additives that meet or exceed Porsche's specs. And they promote that fact with well known shops and on Porsche forums.
FWIW- At ABCC in April I ran M1 15W50. Used a quart of oil in 3 days, and the car smoked every time I started it up for 15-20 sec. Ran 220 degrees oil temp.
For BHF, I switched to Brad Penn 20W50 semisynthetic. Didn't use a bit of oil in 3 days, only slight trace of smoke at start up and 220 oil temp. So the additive package works as described on their spec sheets.
