Default Info from a cop friend as per the drivers license confiscation process during traffic stops in IL

Per a state trooper friend of mine:

"An IL driver can post his DL, cash or, depending on the violation, a bond card (the bond card must be approved by the clerk of the court in question). A PR or I-bond is an option, but we have no obligation to issue one. We generally only use them so we don't have to lock somebody up for a minor traffic violation and take them before a judge. If somebody has a DL in possession, it would be very unlikely to issue a PR or I-bond. If a person didn't have a DL in possession (or had one but said they didn't) we would issue the PR bond , but we'd then likely write the Failure to Carry/Display DL ticket in addition."

Veteran cops perspective.

Default Because that takes a ton of work and delay to get it issued and approved. No reason to turn a

traffic stop into a 45min to 1.5 hour stop.

All a driver needs to do is go to an ATM and go to the police station the same day and they can get their license back.

Or carry a bond card.

Or in most jurisdictions, carry $100 or less in cash.

As I understand it, the officer has the choice of what he can accept.

It's also illegal to go and get a duplicate license, though it's certainly not enforced.

If you drive in IL, you should get a bond card from your insurance co or from AAA. Worth every penny.

Default Last cop never told me what my options are. He just said, 'I'm gonna have to kae your license...'

Wish I knew my options. Taking someones DL for 3 weeks is ridiculous. But oh well. I've got 2 now.

Default sure. But that measn I have to pay $90 a year for AAA. What if I don't want to?

49 other states don't do it. Why does IL? I mean the damn ticket was ~$50-60...why couldn't I just pay that on the spot if I admitted I was guilty, like I did.

Default Probably a bad policy to permit cops to accept cash on the spot for a violation.

Though I'm sure it works in Chile.

Default As long as they issue you a receipt/ticket, why not?

Besides, I wouldn't mind paying him $30 instead of giving the state $60 =)

Default Chile? Hell, it still works in Chicago so long as you buy a $50 pencil from his pocket.

Price might have gone up though.
