As a former Rally driver and 7year Eventmaster for the Gruppe-q Steamboat Ice Track Event, I can add our tire comparo for the 20 some quattros that run the event each year. Steamboat's Ice track is a multiplane (unlike single plane lake events) Road course covered in a foot of ice located at 7300ft in the hills of Steamboat Springs CO. No studs are allowed on track, but any other tire is welcome (and has been run).
The ringer has been the Blizzacks for several years, until just a couple years ago when the Hokka Rsi finally rose to the challenge. The benefit of the original Blizzack WS-50 is still the standard to which all others are compared IME/O. The 'improvement' on that tire in terms of 'performance' over the years is minimal, read: Driver makes a bigger difference.
At our 2008 Event this past Feb we had equally Rsi and Blizzack flavors on 20 quattros, from new to old school. For all intents and purposes the Blizzack winter (insert flavor) and the Hoka Rsi should be considered equal in terms of winter performance. That said, along with helping Luke out, the prices on Blizzacks are much better than the Hoka's.
I will also say that if you haven't done a winter driving event in a quattro, you'll learn more in 2 days than 10 years of driving on tarmac.
