Read the linked thread...Walter said it was setup for auto-renew, but the renewal never occurred.

I own many domain names and if it's set for auto-renew, unless the cc is expired it renews..........

Default Repost. To be honest, decent registrars give notice 90, 60, 30, 15, and 3 days before lapse.

Most of my domains are on auto-renew and it's a pretty consistent function. If GoDaddy wasn't reliable in auto-renew, there would either be an enormous stink on the web and it probably wouldn't be in business.

Hell, I've even made the mistake of not renewing in time and GoDaddy holds it for up to 5 or so days after lapse.

As ****ty as the situation is, it's the domain owners fault for not having current info for contact. It's also a rule of thumb to never use the domain's email system for contact info.

Are they playing a game of keep-away with it or something?

Default they snagged it when it expired. it's theirs and people who visit the website are redirected

to the new owner.

I'm not sure how responsive the new owner is but this is a growing trend and people try to make money off of picking up expiring domains since they know a trail of visitors will get redirected to the new owners site.

Default I'm not sure how it happened. I honestly didn't get any notice... most likely due to

incorrect contact infor or something. I've moved 3 times in the last year. I typically don't think about the domain since it runs itself 90% of the time.
