Most of my domains are on auto-renew and it's a pretty consistent function. If GoDaddy wasn't reliable in auto-renew, there would either be an enormous stink on the web and it probably wouldn't be in business.
Hell, I've even made the mistake of not renewing in time and GoDaddy holds it for up to 5 or so days after lapse.
As ****ty as the situation is, it's the domain owners fault for not having current info for contact. It's also a rule of thumb to never use the domain's email system for contact info.

to the new owner.
I'm not sure how responsive the new owner is but this is a growing trend and people try to make money off of picking up expiring domains since they know a trail of visitors will get redirected to the new owners site.

incorrect contact infor or something. I've moved 3 times in the last year. I typically don't think about the domain since it runs itself 90% of the time. :shrug:
