but drivers in Beverly & Morgan Park think it is for their pleasure to race each other. I've had 2 incidences since beginning riding ealier this month. Both have caused me to fall off my bike.
1/ This one happened at 6:30 in the morning. An elderly security guard driving a company car hits me with his passenger side mirror. The mirror is toast and I am on the ground. The guard gets out of the car and start screaming at me that I should be on the sidewalk riding. I point to the bike lane stripes on the pavement. He looks and yells when
did they paint those on. I told him they have been there for quite some time. He gets pissed and says that it's the Mayor's fault that bike riders are on the street. Cop rolls up and I tell him what has happened. The old man goes ballistic when he is issued a citation. He curses both me and the cops as he leaves.
2/ Yesterday a White trash woman in a beat Dodge cuts me off because I get in front of her at a traffic lite at 111th. She cuts me off causing me to roll off the bike. I suffer cuts & scratches and she laughs and takes off. Bitch.
Biking on the Southside is an adventure.

How's the bike? (j/k)
Are you as visible as possible?
Don't blend in, be seen. Flashing lights on your backpack and bright colored jacket/jersey go a long way when commuting, especially in the morning when some people are half asleep.
Be safe.

I'm amazed at the number of individuals that believe that they are alone on this planet. A functioning society works only with mutual respect and the sharing of common resources; concepts sorely lacking in the United States, circa 2008.
Your decision to ride to work to 1) reduce your fuel consumption, 2) gain a health benefit, and 3) reduce pollution is very commendable. Unfortunately, your well-being is threaten by your actions and the lack of respect by others. In part, that is why it is very difficult to effect positive policy change on any dimension, let alone, reduce our profligate consumption of energy from foreign sources.
