Paul W used the "handle end" of a thin disposable plastic putty knife. He volunteered to remove mine when I bought the "blind-spot" mirrors from him last year - it takes less than a minute if you know what you're doing.
Did they butcher the wiring or did they take care with the little connectors? If they didn't rip everything out of there, then it's a simple job to replace the mirror. It's still a PITA that you have to do it at all, and it's a very strange thing for someone to take just the mirrors.
I might have my original driver's side mirror laying around if you're interested.
