WOOT! We found a house!
Looks like I get to stay in Westchester. Damn, I didn't think we'd find one in our price range that was bigger than a tool shed. I swear, realestate prices are getting so ridiculous I don't know how people, even on modest but decent salaries, can afford to buy houses any more unless you go to a neighborhood that is riddled with currency exchanges, pawn shops, liquor stores and Rent-a-center's.
We got lucky. We were resigned to looking out in the boondocks like St. Charles and Plainfield because the houses are more affordable out that way, and the neighborhoods are still decent. But we were kind of reluctant because of the long commutes, and distance from our friends and family.
Then my wife found out that a co-worker's elderly father is getting ready to move in with his daughter, and wants to sell his house, which happens to be just a few blocks away from where we live now. We arranged a deal directly between seller and buyer, with no realestate middleman. I almost feel guilty what we are getting this house for.
The house is in great shape, but needs some serious cosmetic updating and can use an addition for more liveable space. The kitchen and bathroom are all original from teh 1950's. We're talking pink tiles on the bathroom walls. Eeeeew.
So we're closing in late January, then we remodel it and move in hopefully by April or May. Let the modding begin! We'll just re-do the kitchen and bath for now just to get it up to date. Then we'll look at bigger long term projects, like an upstairs addition, a little further down the road.
My wife can't wait to start demolishishing the kitchen with a sledgehammer. She's vicious!

It's on Newcastle... about 3 or 4 blocks east of LaGrange Rd, and about 3 blocks north of 22nd.
and the house I'm in now (renting) is on Shakespeare, closer to Wolf and 22nd.
