2014 Audi A7 Prestige A/C issue
My AC works on and off. Very cold at first, then after 15-20 min or so, it switches to ambient air. 20 min later it's back on, and will cycle through this many times. I checked underneath the car after driving for a while with cold AC at full blast and there was no AC condensate dripping at all. Would a clogged AC drain line be what is causing the AC to operate intermittently? By the way, I have no condensate leaked inside the car.

The intermittent operation of your AC could indeed be linked to a clogged drain line. A blocked drain hampers moisture evacuation, leading to freezing of the evaporator coil, causing the AC to switch to ambient air to thaw. When the coil thaws, the system resumes cooling until the cycle repeats. Lack of condensate outside suggests a potential drain blockage. Inspect and clear the drain line. If the issue persists, consult a professional to assess the evaporator coil, refrigerant levels, and overall system functionality, ensuring a comprehensive solution to your AC's intermittent operation.

While a clogged AC drain line can cause issues, such as water accumulation and potential damage to the interior of the car, it might not be the primary reason for the intermittent operation of your AC. The lack of condensate leaking inside the car is a positive sign, as it suggests that the drain line is at least partially functioning.
The issue with your AC cycling on and off could be caused by various factors, and it's recommended to have a professional mechanic diagnose and address the problem. Some possible reasons for your AC troubles include:
The issue with your AC cycling on and off could be caused by various factors, and it's recommended to have a professional mechanic diagnose and address the problem. Some possible reasons for your AC troubles include:
- Refrigerant Issues: Low refrigerant levels or a refrigerant leak can lead to intermittent cooling. A certified technician can check the refrigerant levels and identify any leaks.
- Faulty Compressor: The compressor is a crucial component of the AC system. If it's failing, it could result in intermittent operation. A mechanic can assess the condition of the compressor.
- Electrical Issues: Problems with the electrical components, such as relays, switches, or wiring, can cause the AC to cycle on and off unexpectedly.
- Temperature Sensor Malfunction: The AC system relies on various sensors to monitor temperature and regulate cooling. A malfunctioning temperature sensor may cause the system to behave erratically.
- Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube Issues: Problems with the expansion valve or orifice tube can impact the proper flow of refrigerant through the AC system.
