Audi club go-kart race day at Ocala Gran Prix, info and feeler post:

There seemed to be some interest when I propsed a go-kart day up at Ocala Gran Prix, and I have some basic information for you guys so we can get the ball rolling. I called today to get more info, but the lady that I need to talk to is in the office Monday through Friday. Here's what I do know though:
We can rent the track out for ourselves for the day for about $120 (give or take a few dollars) per person.
They provide helmets but require you to wear closed toed shoes, and long pants (I would recommend gloves and long sleeves too).
The karts are about 9hp, and they get up to about 40-45mph at the end of the main straightaway. They are very fun to drive. Also, I have a rotax 125cc kart that I keep at the track, and would be willing to lend it out for those interested in taking it for a spin for a few laps (it's about 30 horsepower, pretty quick, a blast to drive).
A little opposite lock in the rotax:

We can setup the racing any way we like, here are a few options:
Split our group in half and hold heat races. The top four finishers of the heat race in each group qualify for the front of the grid for the main event race. Everyone else gets to race, but starts at the back. Or we could run some practice sessions, and then split into 2 or 3 driver teams and run an endurance race. The 2 hours of Ocala presented by the Audi Club of Florida? Has a nice ring to it. There would be mandatory pit stops for refueling and driver changes, but I think it sounds like a fun idea. I still have to talk to the guys at OGP to iron things out, but lets start a discussion about when and how we want to do this.
I propose the date of Sunday, October 16th. It's a little ways off, but it lets us figure out what we want, get a full group of people to sign up, etc...
What says you guys?

http://www.ocalagranprix.com/

If I can't wear flip-flops, I'm not coming.
Oct 16th might be too soon after Road Atlanta, depending on wife requirements and funding for car-related activities.
I'd probably try to make it down.

Do they rent shifter karts?

Had a blast in a shifter kart a few months ago. After driving the shifter all day I got into a Rotax and said "Bleh..." :-)

I've driven both and there is a difference....
The carts at Speed Indoor Racing accelerate a lot quicker, thus allowing for mistakes. The carts I drove in Ocala leave little room for error. They take a little longer to get up to speed, so if you screw up, you may never catch back up.
The Ocala track and carts give people that are consistant a big advantage over those that can turn one quick lap time.
They are both completely different and they are both fun.
When we did the heats leading up to the final race, it was awesome.
Hell, staying to his form, Audi John even wrecked a cart. I think he managed to flip one into the hay bales.....
