About the same size, and a lot more effective. Dont get me wrong, the MK23 is a great handgun (especially when equipped with the Knight's suppresor) but it is just too freakin big.
Believe it or not, I prefer my Bersa .380. Its small/light, I've tweaked it to be VERY reliable (polished ramp and internals), and with a frame mounted/fixed 4" barrel it is extremely accurate. Not to mention that it is cheap enough that I dont care if it gets scratched, dropped, used as a hammer etc.

I've shot a .45 in the past and it just had too much recoil. It's been about 7-8 years since I've last shot one, but I will try one again.

The .45 is a big slow bullet in a big frame, so the recoil is more of a push, than a snap. The .40 is a big fast bullet in a small frame (actually same frame size as a 9). So the recoil is much snappier, and it is harder to reacquire the target on succesive shots.
The .45 frame has more mass to help absorb recoil energy.
I think a 9mm is plenty of power if you use the bullet size that the gun was designed for (147 grain). If you do get a 1911 style .45, avoid anything other than 230 grain bullets. Its what it was designed for, and what it shoots the best in my experience.
