Guy had a nice one, but I think it is way out of my price range. I want to spend $500-$600, and have it with MP3 capability and voice prompting.

It's a PDA with GPS built in...internet browsing...You can get memory cards to hold music and more maps, etc.
I have several different map packages for my M5 including North American City Select and World Map (for when I go abroad). For off-road use I have US Topography and US National Parks (East) map sets.
I really like the ability of the Garmin to travel. Although I wouldn't classify it as rugged, I have taken it on some rougher outings. I used an external antenna when I took my Alaska cruise earlier this year. I was able to track the entire cruise - including a helicopter ride to a glacier. These tracks can be downloaded to your computer and then integrated with satellite imagery on Google Earth. That is a very cool feature, especially if you like to make home movies because you can work the travel image into your movie.
I included a link to a track I recorded on Google Earth showing a bike trip I took on the north loop of the Paisley bike trail.
I think the M5 is discontinued, but you can usually find them on ebay (as well as the other stuff). Here's an eBay link to one:

There is a "web updater" application that you download from Garmin. When you connect the Nuvi to your PC and run this app. it checks to see if you have the latest software and maps and updates them accordingly.
