Rear main seal leaks are common according to all the folks on Rennlist, and the problem is that if you replace the seal ($20 seal, $1000 labor), and it continues to leak, then you have what Porsche terms "block out of spec." Meaning that you have to buy a new block for your engine. Go Porsche! Many boxster owners were lucky enough to have this happen while still under warranty. Also, you want to stay far far away from '97s; they have huge problems with water leaking in the cabin and shorting out the electronics, and they have the plastic rear window (until 2000) which cannot be replaced seperate from the top (although some have found marine shops that can do it).
I looked at a '99 2 weeks ago for $17K. Pretty harsh on the inside, but low miles. So far I think the best way to own one is to buy new. There are too many reported high dollar problems with the car for me to consider right now.

Check swapalease or leasetrader, too.. Sometimes they have under 12 month leases, pick one up and see how you like it.. Try before you buy.
