Default Rear Brake Replacement: I know. Boring but insight is appreciated

Help a guy not look like a dope to his wife. . .

I attempted last time to replace the rotors and pads on a '98. Trying to compress the piston on one side and a frozen caliper on the other made that a fun experience.

NOW. A '01 to replace the pads. Removal of the bolts holding on the caliper assemby, easy. Getting the caliper assembly off the rotor, not happening.

I've heard of special tools to turn and compress the piston, but that's after you get the caliper off the rotor and removed the pads, I assume. I'm not even THERE yet.

Got a small lip on the rotor but nothing offensive. The rotor is spinning between the pads so the pads aren't siezed on the rotor.

Oh yeah. The emergency break is off of course.

Any suggestions from this group of sage Auiphiles is appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the insights.

Default If you are in Orlando, many of us have the rear brake tool that we can loan you.

As for getting the caliper off the rotor, I just use a BIG screwdriver and pry the caliper outward off the rotor.

Default are you saying you got the caliper guide pins off the caliper

if so then all you need to do is take a large flat head screw driver and start prying off the caliper off the carrier, nothing sits on the rotor. once the caliper is off then you can take the carrier off to get to the rotor. If the rear rotor is rusted on, take a nice rubber mallet and hit the rotor all the way around, it should just fall off. Oh impact wrench works great for taking those carrier bolts off.

See. Monday afternoon on a holiday, perfect weather outside. I knew people would be online. (joke)

I was going to try the BIG screwdriver technique, but I thought that would be a bit too Neaderthal for a first effort. A more cerebral method, I thought, should be available.

I'm in Orlando(Ovideo/Tuskawilla)so the "borrow the tool" would be a tremendous offer.

I'm in the middle of porting my emails over from Earthstink Dialup to Earthstink DSL.
By the way. I love my wireless network. Being in the garage with my car and typing this message. Sweet.

Christian. I'll email you and you can point me to the person I should contact for the tool.

Thanks again Christian and Jon for your guidance.

Default another way to back the piston in is to use a good set of needle nose pliers

and a c-clamp.
