I'm looking at getting an iPod and an adaptor to use it in the car. I want to go with an MP3 or MP3 VBR format (iPod supports both, up to 320kbps).
I don't want to go overkill and make massive files that I'll hear no sound reproduction out of off the iPod/in the car, however, I do listen to MP3's on my computer at times, and may at a future date, jack into my Denon receiver to play MP3's through that.
I don't have super high quality home speakers (modest NHT stuff), and my car stuff is still stock.
What's the best route to make MP3's while keeping high quality but not ridiculous file size, so I can maximize the space.

I get excellent sound quality in a 128 bit file size. J stereo uses all of the bits, so you aren't wasting file size recording blank spots on a specific channel.
Big props to Ross for the pointers.

How much storage space do you have?
Right now I'm getting ready to start re-ripping everything in FLAC so I can transcode to any format and not have to rip the albums again. FLAC is compressed lossless and usually about a 2:1 compression ratio. I have one problem with ripping to FLAC/CUE that I have yet to figure out.
I would start out using --preset standard, that should encode files with around a 192kbps ABR. If you want better quality try --preset extreme, that is around 240kbps ABR.
Some people have said good things about 3.96.1 but I'm still using 3.90.3 and that still seems what the old guard is recommending. When I get home I'll post my encoder string so you don't have to figure out how to pass the metadata.

They use VBR its just that usually they end up around those sizes. ABR will force a particular average bit rate. VBR is the best because your letting the encoder make the decision, and with a good encoder like LAME it's a good choice.

--alt-preset standard --add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2 --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n" %s %d
