Default Ross, Shane and I just got back from test driving the new W8 Passat....

They had a W8 Wagon (W8W?) and let us take it out. Engine bay looks very cramped......but maybe there's a little more open room than an S4. Exhaust sound: down right beautiful - raspy V8 hummmm. Xenon lights, memory seats, CD player, wood trim (was that fake?), nice Euro-look gauges (aluminum banded gauges and tiptronic only. Down sides: still somewhat of a cheaper looking interior compared to say an A6/A4, no manual option, 16 wheels (lame), silly cupholders, and a price tag of $39K.

So....is it fast? Sort of. Feels powerful, but I am pretty sure a chipped 1.8t manual could spank it. I think VW claims 0-60 in 7.5 seconds...sure is a long time for a 270hp engine.

The price is too high if you ask me, they would sell well if they were more in the $35K range and had an available 6 speed...but then they would be stealing a lot of A4 3.0 sales....like ALL of the A4 sales.

Default VW usually underates all of their factory specs. Some of the 180hp 1.8's are making 200hp

Their 0-60 times are usually conservative as well so that the average driver can duplicate them. All of the magazines have beaten the factory 0-60 claims by a fair margin. I haven't seen anything on the W8 though.

Default dumb question perhaps.. but why only some?

If 1 car/model with that engine is making 200HP unmodified, wouldnt every car?

Default I am referring to the 2002 Jetta/Golf platform. Engine code AWP

Some of the cars have dyno'd at 170+ at the wheels (so figure 190+ at the crank). So either they have the most efficient drivelines in the world, or they are more than 180 crank hp. Of course this may be a freak batch of engines that were assembled under the right astrological conditions.

Default right.. the 2002 are the only 180HP models anyway.. I thought you meant some of those

like some 2002 jettas dyno more than others, which would be.. odd.
