Default the Rabbit GTI. (long)

The original, and still my fav.
I picked one up while I was in Alaska for $300. It was silver and had some surface rust on the door and a droopy headliner. The owners wife listed it and boy was he sad to see it go. It needed a clutch kit cause it bucked like crazy, some new shox cause it was way bouncy. I worked at the VW dealer up there so I had cheap access to parts. The '83 came with a super-short ratio trans. only did 90 on the highway, but it ran up there quick!
Most need new shifter bushings, as well as other rubber, and some body work, but there are a few cherries out there. ALL of them have ripped seats. Of course you have to listen for valve tapping, water pump, and wheel bearing noises. A/C was available but hardly ever works and should be deleted with an available kit. Don't forget power steering - there isn't any!
Its doubtful that you will find an MK1 GTI around here though. They were built in Westmoreland, PA, and are plentiful (relatively) in the north. Mine came from Texas which is why it had so little rust, but also why the rubber was all dry-rotted.

Nothing near anything built in the 90's. It has 4 lugs, not 5.
