Melbourne is nice, so is Sarasota and the southwest coast. Gainesville is getting to be a decent sized city, so that is worth a look. Personally, I think Daytona is horrible.

My dad bought a house and lot in Palm Coast a few years ago. The house is up 100% and the lot is up over 400% in value.
Values in FL are crazy. Sold my house in Broward county 18 months ago for $285K and it's worth over $400K now.

Unless you live in the sticks or with your parents or something.
...And you'll save money on taxes (no state income tax), car costs (insurance is cheaper, and no snow tire expense every year), and gas.

Low prices are hard to find these days; water views are the priciest, it seems.
I'm in Punta Gorda, between Fort Myers and Sarasota, and prices here reportedly went up 35% from Jan 03 to Jan 04 for listed single family homes. But part of that is due to a current housing shortage, and shortage of labor to fix things up, thanks to Hurricane Charley. So there's speculation that price increases here should moderate as those issues work themselves out.
This area is less congested, tho there's plenty of traffic in season. Prices here still are generally lower than prices in the bigger cities. We're not on the Gulf, but Charlotte Harbor is a big body of water (4-5 mi by 11 mi) with great fishing, sailing, sunsets etc.
Prices here start around 140s for a 2 bedroom new condo in Deer Creek east of I-75, with carport parking and view of a small lake/large pond.

http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050226/BUSINESS/502260394/-1/ARCHIVES30</a
