Just another way for the court to get a fee...
IMO I wouldn't worry about the whole mandatory court thing. I have experienced the same thing in a small town in OH. They just wanted to collect the court costs as well as the fine.

Consult a lawyer...
...as luck would have it, I clerked for a law firm in Hickory, NC back in 1987. If you can't find a lawyer, let me know and I'll refer you to someone. I don't know if she handles this kind of issue, but she could probably get you pointed in the right direction.

Call the clerk of courts up, ask to speak to the hearing officer for the citation.
Tell them you are from out of town and it would obviously be rough to make it up there for your apperance.
Inform him/her that you would like to plead no contest to the ticket, as you agree you were speeding (make some side comment about getting wrapped up in the left lane down a hill or something), and see if they can not send the points back to Florida.
I've done that twice, both times they called the trooper, presumably asked if I was a jerk or doing something real stupid, and then called me back with a "Hows $50 a no points sound?".. Real simple.
No lawyer needed. I actually called the clerk up on recommendation of a lawyer I called, who said I didnt need to use their services...
