Default 1st price quote in, DAMN

Its a big number, got an idea from a friend of mine. Someone here said the 16V VW are just like my 20, except i have one more cylinder. Well would the parts be the same, and would VW parts be less than Audi parts? I can look the parts for the VW up in ETKA but i have no clue which VW are 16V's, anyone out here know?

BTW. the quote was from VW AutoHaus.

Default My guess would be starting at $500 for a rebuild depending on the damage.

That would be all the valve guides. It goes up from there with bent valves, etc.

Default For new springs and guides and seals more like 1k, Valves should be fine

Hey would you know how the valve guides are seated? Is it possible for a valve guide to go and cause a coolant leak into the cylinder or are the valves pressed into solid aluminum?

Default The valve guides should be pressed into solid aluminum

but they're bronze or some other metal and they wear out. The valve gets a little play in it and smacks itself into a slight leak and you've lost some compression.

I have NO idea how it all fits together. :-) Thats what I pay good money to the head rebuilders for. They have all the tools and do it right.

Jimmy, there are two 16v vw engines, the 1.8 16v and 2.0l 16v. Our 2.3's are more like the 1.8 16v's, contrary to popular belief. I am unsure if the stroke or bore is different, but if you do the math, adding a cylinder to a 1.8 makes for a 2.3, wheras a 20 litre would make a 2.5 5 cylinder... The 1.8 came in 1987-1989 Scirocco 16v's and 87-89 Gti and jetta trophy/gtx models. The 2.0l 16v's came in all passats from 1990-1992 (most common) and in 1990-92 Golf gti 16v and Jetta trophy/gtx.

Default I rebuilt my head this last summer and got all my parts from VM.

A lot of parts were cheaper than the WorldPac sites, but it still cost a lot to do it right. Having a nicely rebuilt head and not burning any oil is a really really good feeling though.
