Hi all
I bought a 92 S4 about a year ago, and the car was/is very solid. I went thru the records and saw it just had a tune up recently from a notable dealer. Long story short, one of the plugs backed out of the head and in doing so...Totally stripped any threads in the head along the way, not to mention destroy the coil/plug as well.
My question is, does the head have to come off in order to helicoil the plug hole or can it be done by someway I am not familiar with.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Tim

Basically had the same thing happen to my #3 cylinder on my 94 S4. I decided to pull the head off and found this. Ended up buying another head.
You should also post this question in the Original S car forum.

The cracks around the plug hole are the kicker.
You can do a Helicoil on a car (generic). However wih a 20V whether it's a 7A/3B/AAN, there's not a lot of room to use the setting tool. Once you get your hands on the tool, you'll see the handle is pretty short.
I already had the head off on mine when I did it, so I did it from the underside going upwards.
The only thing that would prevent youu from doing it on the car is the depth of the sparkplug hole. Beyond that, you just need to make sure not to get any small bit's in the bore. That includes the small tab on the Helicoil that you break off.
