Anyone else think that 8 speed automatics will kill paddle shifting? Who wants...

You buy an automatic so the car shifts for you. If you want to shift, buy a manual. Period.
Shifting an automatic is nothing more than a gimmick. I see C&D complain that certain cars don't offer a manumatic feature. Who cares? If I was going to shift every single time using tip, why bother buying a tip? Buy a manual. Otherwise, the need to shift in an auto is very seldom, at which point, I can reach down and move the selector to a lower gear.

1. DSG. It's an automatic, but also a highly useful manual shifter. Selecting and holding a gear is essential to performance driving, and an automatic that can do this for you has yet to be invented. DSG is so good, it gets better acceleration times than a manual.
2. For track use, a tiptronic/manumatic is a way to hold lower gears when an automatic might otherwise upshift, AND it is a way to downshift prior to entry into a turn so that the transmission does not downshift when you apply the gas to go through or exit the turn.

If I were ever going to do without a manual, it would have to be a DSG. You are right, they do get better times than a manual does. Plus, it's always in the right gear whenever you want it. I absolutely love how it can do a 6-3 downshift without having to go 6,5,4,3. Plus the shifts are lightening fast.
You are right about the track. That's an application where a manumatic makes more sense. Being that I've only ever driven a manual, I forgot about track applications.

their biggest hurdles right now are:
- limited power transmission capability
- unproven durability in the field, tho we'll see in a few yrs w/ current crop sold
- public perception of how rpm vs. car speed "should" sound/feel. Even current crop of CVTs mimic fixed gears when floored.
