Default might wanna try using an adjustable hole cutter instead

Search on Mcmaster.com for "hole cutter" (item # 8830A13 or 3082A2). Tho I'm not sure if that thing could cut hard metal like stainless steel...

Default Tomasz, you are welcome to use my drill press but stainless is really really hard!

Believe it or not, if this were 1/16th of an inch thick, it would do a number on the drill bits. 5/8th is pretty much impossible.

But, it's up you. I have an old Sears Craftsman bench-top drill press with a belt/pulley system that gives you three drilling speeds.

Search the Internet for drilling in stainless steel, and you'll see what you are up against. It's going to be a really tough job.

Default Do you know the exact grade of the SS?

Some SS work hardens so you must use a higher speed to cut it before it hardens. If you use a hole saw that requires a lower cutting speed, you may harden the SS before you are able to complete the cut. Once hardened, more than likely, you will just dull the hole saw to the point it will be useless. Another huge disadvantage to a hole saw is their inability to efficiently clear the chips generated during cutting.

A boring style hole cutter, like Dean mentioned, is probably more appropriate for this application.

What are the outside dimensions of the piece?

Default Ugh, yea it is...tends to BUE regardless of cutting speed.

(Built Up Edge). ie: it's like cutting a clean edge in styrofoam with a stick. :P

Default You may have to go to a machine shop.

That stuff's high levels of carbon and chromium make it really hard and tough - its Rockwell hardness is 82.
