Default The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from Summit this weekend...

THE GOOD:
in mixed weather conditions which ranged from damp to downpour there were no accidents on Sunday.

Most students were paired with good instructors that understood the dynamics of their particular platform (FWD, AWD, RWD, etc...).

Most students I heard comment that they definitely planned to return next year.

Students experienced wet weather and dry weather driving.

THE BAD:
2 wrecked cars on the first day. 1 instructor car, 1 student car. Likely totaled.

It was a cooooold rain on sunday.

Drew's 80HP civc was faster down the main straight than my P-Car in the rain. :-P

THE UGLY:
Some things were said about the incident the instructor was involved in. There was an interpretation of the event that was presented without complete objectivity and without all of the available data. Unfortunately this affected the viewpoints of some students. The warnings issued as a result of the incident were completely valid. It is arguable however, what the cause of the incident was.

I'm thankful no one was seriously injured.

<RANT>
I find it interesting that I hear people say they'd never go to the track because accidents can happen. However when accidents happen like this weekend's incident to Simply J, no one starts claiming the interstates are too dangerous to drive. Admittedly that is an oversimplified comparison of responses. Incidents at the track are rarely an issue for novice/beginner level students. Yes, they happen but generally ones ego is the only thing bruised. Pay attention to what your instructor says and only drive in your comfort zone and you'll be far less likely to be involved in any incident.
</RANT>

Personally speaking: My goal as an instructor is not to make you the fastest guy out there! the Audi schools are about safety and learning vehicle dynamics in a safe environment. If you want to be the "fastest" seriously consider a proper racing school. if you want to learn how to drive well, quickly and safely, or just be a better driver in general please come out to one of our Audi events.

All of the above is my personal opinion and not sponsored, supported or endorsed by Audi, The Audi Club, etc...

Gratuitious picts to increase views. Hell, if you made it this far thorugh my drivel you need some sort of reward!;-)

Default I was in the instructor car that wrecked at summit this weekend...

And my instructor didn't do anything to make me feel unsafe at any time. What happened was a freak occurance and was not his fault at all. He wasn't driving in a way that was any different than the way he normally drives. The incident could have been a lot worse had the instructor been inexperienced and not maintained the best control over the car that he could. He remained cool, calm and collected throughout the entire incident. I agree with KJ 100% and this is the first time I'm hearing of anyone doubting what occured on monday. Bottom Line: I was there, I KNOW. I have already filled out my paperwork for VIR in december and plan to be back out there. In fact, I actually did some driving on tuesday even after the incident. If I felt unsafe with the instructors, track or event I wouldn't have been back out there.

thats it...

Default Red X's....

One thing to keep in mind is that as a result of Jason's car being totalled, he can sue the truckers ins. co. if need to get money out of them since they are liable... If he totalled the car at the track, he'd be at the mercy of HIS ins. co. and his rates would go up as a result...

Just a counterpoint, not an arguement.

Default not so much hed have to deal with his insurance and his rates would go up...

many insurance companies wont even cover your car if the incident happens on a "track"

ask dave (formerly of pro-imports) about that

Default I talked to Larry and Drew last night and heard about that stuff. :-( Bad luck for him lately

at the track. Glad he's okay.

I agree with your rant. I've been struggling to explain the relative dangers of track driving to people out here (who are much more conservative in nature than in the DC area). They hear about one track incident and think that it's an incredibly dangerous place to be. However, rarely do they compare it to highway accidents. I try to point out all of the safety features of track driving - runoff, tire walls, ambulance crew on standby, passing rules, corner workers, etc. - but there are always those uninformed individuals who don't get it and probably never will. Very frustrating, especially when the *streets* would be safer if everyone polished their skills on the *track*.

Give me a call one of the nights so that we can make fun of Larry trying to copy your line through turn 3. You know - the one through the gravel? :-p

Default Weren't you riding in the Cobra at VIR when it decided to cross county lines?

I think you're bad luck!

Either way, glad to see you shedding your krauter background and getting into track driving. Sounds like you're enjoying yourself!

Many other insurance companies will cover track incidents. Check your policy for exclusions.
