Default I want to teach my wife to snowboard near DC, any sugestions?

I am a very good skiier and I kinda know how to snowboard. My wife wants to learn to snowboard. And I want to take her this Fri, and possible stay fri night if it is not that expensive.

Any sugestions? The slopes do not have to be that good. It would be better if they had good instructors, cheap rates and decent resturants

Default Whitetail is OK - it's close, and the slopes aren't terrible

Not sure about the restaurant options....we rented a condo with bunch of people slope-side and cooked in....not a bad option. My wife is a ski snob, but actually liked the convenience of being 70 minutes from the city and thought the skiing was fine. A couple friends took boarding lessons and said the instructors were pretty good.

Default liberty is slightly closer and imo slightly better...

although both places basically suck.

couple places that are better around here (but slightly further) are blue **** and seven springs.

might want to check those out, more dining options as well.

Default Check snow reports, conditions, and forecast

Whitetail and Liberty are your close choices. If you have multiple days to spend, then I'd go for Seven Springs. It's about 3.5 hours drive from here but easily better than the first two. Otherwise flip a coin. For starting out I don't think one has an advantage over the other.

With the recent warm spell, I'd be concerned about snow depth and coverage. You don't want to be cruising along and then run into a bare patch. On the other hand, if you are beginners, then you'll never be going fast enough for this to happen - and you'll be on slopes that are covered with man-made snow.

I will say that learning to snowboard in this area is punishing. The snow is never really deep (maybe 24" base) and it freezes over at night. It hurts to fall over and over again on ice.

Last tip - Whitetail is in a "dry" county. They don't sell or serve alcohol anywhere (and prohibit drinking beer in their parking lot).

If you're really up for a drive, Snowshoe WV beats all of these. It's about a 5 hour drive. Here's the good part - they have a special deal for two nights lodging and two days lift tickets for $99/person. You can't beat that! The deal is good anytime except weekends (and probably holidays).

Default Oh I know all about snowshoe, my dad owns a place up there

I am actually a really good skiier, but I have never been anywere in Penn or MD. My wife is the one that needs to learn.

The thing about snowshoe is that the drive up there can be very unpredictible.

BTW, you should try MTBiking up there it is insane

Default they have some very good beginner trails...

and liberty has much worse conditions.

ive taught a couple women at blue **** and a couple at liberty, much better at blue **** imo. id say seven springs is the best of those for teaching though

Default I was there today and it was pretty damn good, as cold as it should be

Only problem are the boarders who fall down and just lay there like roadkill
