For the same price I can get a basic carpeted dual 10" box or a band-pass box with the subs mounted inside, plexiglass top and 4 ports. Besides the pand-pass box just looking better and keeping the subs safe from damage, is there a sound benefit to either?

Default it depends what sound you are looking for

a regular closed box will be a lot tighter in sound and the bandpass will just go boom

Default in basic terms... band pass will give you deeper muddled bass

where a sealed box will be cleaner sound

Default also, a bandpass/ported box will require less power for more boom

but the sealed box will require more obviously but have better sound quality.

Default Rant: You guys with huge subs are obnoxious and will wreck your hearing...

Friggin things blast my ear drums when they're anywhere within a couple of car lengths. They should be banned.

Do you know what you're doing to your hearing? You could be deaf by the time you're 50 (maybe sooner). Each big blast from those subs does damage.

Sorry, but I think anyone that needs to make that much noise to be noticed must be really inadequate in other areas.....like IQ.

Default Did you say something, Jim? ;o)

I like good sounding sound systems, as long as they're clean, and not obnoxious.

I used to run an entire Pioneer Premier head unit with all Soundstream components, and it sounded just lurvely. )

Default

Go for sealed (regular box). That's the most natural bass. Bandpass is very boomy as bertek said.

Default LOL! WHAT?

I used to listen to it loud in the car and had a really kick-butt sytem in my 325e. But I didn't do it for long and didn't have the HUGE subs that many guys use today.

Seriously, each blast from those big subs does a little damage. Do it for long enough.....buh bye hearing.

Default Say what?

I agree arob.
I have 12inch subs at home and in the car I'm selling, and will probably go for a single or double 10 inch setup in my next Audi as well.
It's not about the loud obnoxious bass, it's about a full and rich sound anything under 8 inches just can't provide. Size does matter!
