Reckless driving; how screwed am I ?
83 in a 55 ( Dulles Toll Road ). Clean record for the last eight years.
I've searched the archives and found discussions of $2k fines, license suspensions, and overnight stays in the pokey.
Does anybody have any recent experiences that would give me a clue as to what I'm up against, and/or any suggestions on ways to best handle this?
Thanks,
Rob

No big deal if you haven't had a ticket in a while. Just plead...
not guilty to reckless and tell them you will plead guilty to speeding 15-20 over. Take the online driving class before you go to court. If you still get a reckless then appeal it and try again. It's not a big deal on your first one. I have had several. I got convicted of one and got a $250 fine. I also just got one dropped to a speeding with a $400 lawyer and a terrible driving record. I don't think they checked my record though or else I may have gotten in more trouble. With no tickets in 8 years you should be able to say you are sorry and get it reduced.

Get a lawyer
what donahoe73 said below is definitely possible (I had an RD 86/55 reduced to 74/55 w/ a ticket on record, so it is possible). For greater probability of getting it reduced, have a lawyer there to do the talking for you.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I got lucky on that, but...
it was an 85 in a 55, but i was driving an 85 toyota camry and was on my way to being a counselor at a children's camp...
i got off with 2 points, charged with a 64 in a 55, and like 5-600 in "court costs" and fees.
i had a careless from four years previous for passing a car on the left across the double yellow.. but crap i was 17 and driving a buick at the time. you'd have been frustrated too
I'd advise citing the traffic conditions and that 75ish is a pretty standard speed on that piece, and you were paying such close attention to safe driving that you didnt look away from the road to see what your speed was

my experience
Bring a lawyer. I had to do this twice. Each time my lawyer spoke to the prosecutor outside the courtroom prior to my name being called. The prosecutor spoke to the cop to see if I was a jerk when he stopped me. After that they made a deal to drop it from reckless to "improper driving". Judge made the fine something like $250.
There is no valid argument in court for driving that speed. And anything you come up with.... they've heard it before. So don't go in with the strategy to bullsh!t the judge. You'll only **** him/her off.
Taking the defensive driving course can help. You can tell the judge that you have a clean record, were unaware of just how much you were driving above the limit, and that you take this very seriously..... so much so that you volutarily went to defensive driving class. Hope for the best.
On the bright side, traffic court is entertaining. A bunch of people will show up without the advice you are getting here. They will try to give poor excuses to the judge and you'll get a laugh out of some of it.
