Default Simpler registration question. You buy a used car from private seller in MD, to be reg. in MD.

How do the logistics work? Assuming the car is under MD registration now, and I'm buying it. What do I need to get temp tags?

go to dmv with the title... they would just give you hard tags... unless it needed inspection.

Default here you go...

doing the same thing right now...

basically you need:

title
security of interest filing
inspection certificate (if the previous owner got it for you)
bill of sale
insurance info

if you don't have the inspection certificate you would need to get a temp registration which allows you to drive from your house to the inspection station/shop. Just bring the rest of the docs to get the temp reg. ($20)<ul><li><a href="http://www.marylandmva.com/VehicleServ/REG/buyvehicle.htm#buying">http://www.marylandmva.com/VehicleServ/REG/buyvehicle.htm#buying</a</li></ul>

Default No. Still haven't seen it. Seller is a bit of crank. Just want to be prepared to move.

The guy is hard to communicate with. If it's only got 44k miles, I'll be all over it. At this point nothing's verified.

Default Do the transaction at the MVA....

...that way you can assure that you have all the signatures and paperwork, that the ride isn't stolen and that he is the owner.

that will allow you to get the inspection done before you transfer money and title.

It also gives the seller the assurance that it is retitled immediately and it is a nice public place to transfer money....

It costs both of you a morning, but is the safest and fastest way to do it. He/she turns in the plates, gets the paper to cancel insurance and you get the assurance that nothing is screwy.

Call me paranoid, but I've been burned....
