Default So I changed the pads back from the carbotech track pads I had in today....

WOW, apparently I'm braking HARD. These pads were brand new before the 3 days at VIR. I can't believe the are over half-way gone. Wonger, do you think I should move up to the high level ones? Which ones did you sell me do you remember? 10's? 12's? Anyway, it also looks like they weren't wearing evenly. I have two piston calipers so I can't figure out why that would happen. Might explain the horrible shuddering that I was experiencing.

Default

Not bad at all considering the track config. and the track time on track.

Default vir is not hard on brakes, that seems excessive for only 3 days on track...

back when i used to use carbotechs, i noticed they seem to wear quicker than i thought they should...also note, the carbotechs i used (xp8, 9, 10) didnt really suit my driving style very well (they weren't aggressive enough for my tastes)...

i can typically get several weekends out of a set of race pads at vir...

Default Dave, what pads do you use? I tried CarboTech for 1st time @ VIR also.

They faired better than the EBCs I tried back at Shannendoah (EBC red & yellow). Thanks goes out to BrakeSwap (magnetic1) for setting me up w/ those.

I was getting pad deposit, and felt slight vibrations & softer pedal on Sunday. Ian Baas drove my car on last session Sunday and commented my brakes were getting pretty tired. I didn't quiet have as much pad worn out as Naptown.:R::INDUKTD's did. I also had uneven wear on the front inner pads. Was running XP-10 front, XP-8 rear. A4 stock setup w/ Motul & ATE PowerDisc rotors (contineuous star-shaped thin slots). Thinking the next time I run the Audi I'll use smooth rotors and add brake cooling ducts. Any suggestions?

Oops! What I just did, this is so called "thread-jacking"? Sorry...

Default I ran the Carbotech XP-12s and I'm swapping back to my Hawks tomorrow - I'll take some photos of the

wear for comparison.

Default i use performance friction pfc01's and they work great!

i've also had good results with hawk ht10's and 14's...

i've heard great things about the newer carbotech compounds, apparently they are a lot more aggressive than the ones i have used...

its worth noting that i run hoosiers, my car weighs ~3k lbs with driver, and i have a stoptechs on all corners...

get Eric (magnetic1) to set you up with one of the newer carbotech compounds or maybe hawk ht-10's for the front...

Default 4000 ft straights are always hard on brakes. Hard is relative to rotor and caliper size. What's not

hard on your race BMW is hard on many vehicles.

There are more than a few times per lap he's braking from 130+ to half that speed. Now throw in the above rotor/brake issues and you have the results he experienced.

In the end, the wear proves the point and speaks for itself

Default

Were those from one side? Maybe from uneven cooling(?)

Default i swapped my XP10s for Panther+ at the track. (edit: now with pic)

I put these XP10s on just before Watkins Glen at the end of August (thanks again, Jim!). So they saw 1 day at the Glen, 2 days at Shenandoah, and 3 days at VIR. I'm impressed:

Default Brake cooling ducts are worth more than pad compound in most cases

They will help a ton, but won't be simply to rig up.
