1. Nobody has 3-phase power at their house, and who wants to deal with complex converters.

I know people that make their own (for welders etc) with wire from HD or Lowes and the connector of their choice.
It's no harder to wire an outlet than anything else though.
Personally I'd rather have a new one with a warranty, unless I got it from someone I knew (but 1/2 price for that Rotary is tempting).

You have 2 110 volt AC lines coming into your house which are 180 degrees out of phase with each other (opposite phase). You also have a ground and neutral, but these have a potential equivalent to earth/ground or zero volts.
Your 220 volt appliances connect to those two 110 volt lines. Because one line is at -110 volts while the other line is at +110 volts, the appliance sees 220 volts.
Three phase means that there are three lines, each 120 degrees out of phase with each other. The only things that run on this type of power are heavy industrial machinery.

I was thinking going with a 2 car, and converting to a side-load. Not sure I have enough property on that side of the house though.
