i feel naked without one. where i mounted/hardwired the v1, it was pretty impossible to see from outside the car, unless you knew where to look. How hard are the cops on this? i would really like one, but dont want to spend $400 and have it taken by the cops

1. how hard do they really look for them?
2. if they confiscate it, will i get it back when i move?
3. can i have one in va if its not on? ie, when i go to work in md, or drive back to pa i could use it, just not in va

I don't officially become a resident until Decemberish, when I move here completely.
I'm thinking of hiding mine a bit, as i have the remote shutoff by my knee already.

VA cops *WILL* take radar detectors away and give you a ticket for 'illegal equipment'. I believe it's either $40 or 50. If you go to court, you can pay the fine and the cop should give it back to you. If the cop was not in court, you still have to pay the fine, track down the cop (I had to go to his station), and show the receipt to get the radar detector back.
The law states you can have it in your car as long as it's unplugged and stored out of your reach. 'Out of your reach' may be up for interpretation by each officer, of course.

Keep a small addressed/postage paid envelope or small shipping box, open, in your glove box.
If/when you get pulled over, put the detector in the container, seal the envelope and then grab your registration and proof of insurance.
That should cover you if they want to argue that anywhere in the cabin is 'within reach' - it's a federal offense if they open the container.
I've never tried this but it sounds legit
