Default Cop stopped me for stopping beyond the white line at an intersection

So he didn't need to hit me with radar and didn't set off my V1. He was already right behind me when I saw him, so I didn't have a chance to unplug and put it away. He was a d!ck about it, told me I'd 'never get it back, it's gonna be marked for destruction' and told me not to bother coming to court. Good thing I researched that law, or else I'd have just listened to him.

Default Well, there is probable cause

if they think you're running a detector, if they want to risk justifying a federal offense in court, they can open the box and take it.

Tough call for a $50 ticket and 0 points....if I believed there were drugs in the container, that'd be a different story.

Default Street signs in VA say that they are illegal

I'd ASSume from that, like speed limits, the law is to be obeyed regardless of your home state.

"The law states you can have it in your car as long as it's unplugged and stored out of your reach"

So just having it turned off wont suffice. I only put my RD on the windshield when I'm outs of VA.

Plates don't matter for the law. You may be able to plead ignorance, get a warning and keep it.

Default I've had my V1 for about year w/o any problems. *knock on wood*

When I have been pulled over i just yank it down and stash it. (But i haven't been pulled over for speeding yet). IIRC, they no longer confiscate it. They'll just write you a ticket. I've been meaning to wiring in a kill switch so that if i get pulled over i just kill the V1. If they say that it had to be out of reach, I just say it is hardwired in and hope that the convo ends at that.
