Default who was the local Cingular guy?

I need to buy a phone to replace one that was stolen. The one I want (Sony Ericsson T637) is not being carried by Cingular stores anymore so I think I'm screwed.

But didn't we have someone here that works for Cingular?

Default how about buying off eBay or one of those other sites that sell GSM phones?

Just buy it unlocked and you're good to go.

Default I could go that route... but I don't want to support the stolen phone market

You can never tell if a phone is no longer needed or stolen. So I'm apprehensive about buying from ebay.

I found it online elsewhere for $269. I might do that.

Default I ran this by a Verizon sales person.....

Apparently when a phone is reported stolen, that phone will no longer function on the network. They don't just change your account, they actually cut the phone itself off from service.

So even if it is bought by someone else, it can't be reactivated.

*taken w/ grain of salt from sales rep*

Default Yes, they are supposed to put the ESN of the phone on a blocked list

But a lot of times, I have heard of people just tipping the rep at the store and getting the phone activated anyway.

But on GSM, that doesn't matter. You can pop in a new SIM card and be good to go. Although the phone itself has an ESN, I don't believe it is associated with your account. In fact, I know that to be the case, because I have put my SIM in other people's unlocked GSM phones and my service came up.

Default Interesting, thanks for the info

I need to go see what I can do at the Verizon store....one of the hinges on the Jimax phone has broken, so you have to be very careful when you flip the phone open to talk...otherwise it'll kinda fall apart.

I need to see what I can do about upgrading.
