Default Wow, what a long weekend at Hyperfest... left Friday at 1pm, came back Sunday at 8pm...

Where to start... It was a great time, helped out Andrew (Another Drew) with his Honda Challenge car in the NASA races along with taking pictures for Dado during the drift competition.

Arrived on Friday afternoon to the long line of trailers coming in the Shenandoah entrance. 45 minutes later I'm in and check in with drifters. They had their practice and qualifying sessions on Friday. Everything was running pretty well, Dado was consistent to get him to qualify, but his runs didn't have any drama... either from crashes/breakdowns or from above average performances.

Went over to the Main Paddock to touch base with Andrew (Another Drew) and Eric (Magnetic1). Wonger had the crew services of RRT this weekend so this let me help out the Honda folks... Wow, what a group, they are much like us Audi track folks; well organized and the equipment to back it up. A common area was formed between 2 of the big trailers they had and meals were served 3 times a day. On Sunday they even broadcast the F1 race via HD antenna (after a few glitches were worked out). Overall a great group to hang out with, very friendly!

Friday night there was a small party at the Honda tent (alcoholic coolant FTL). There was a photographer taking pictures in the paddock with a remote flash setup so I wandered over and he agreed to do a photoshoot of my car. Mu car's a bit rough right now because I'm in the middle of getting a bunch of projects finished for Waterfest but his pictures turned out amazing from what I was able to see on the review screen. I'll post his pictures when he's done processing them.

Mike Spock Photography and his partial gallery and a recent teaser video

Same type of photoshoot that he did on my car...

Friday I slept in Dado's trailer, a comfy spot with A/C and couches. Most people in our group went back home since they are all in NoVa so it was a quiet evening. Saturday morning started early with people setting up their cars in the field for Hyperfest. I was going back and further between the Carousel and the Main Paddock to help out all day so if I ran into and didn't stay long I apologize. (I remember seeing Adam, BillKlineVT, and Neil)

The day went on and Andrew did pretty good in his NASA races. He can chime in with his results, but I remember them being 4th and 5th... The front cars were wicked fast! After the racing was over for the day the drift competition started, so I headed back to the other side to start taking pictures for Dado. My media pass let me get pretty close to the action.

At this point I started drinking, might as well since my track obligations were done for the day. I was joined by the grandstands by Bobster, Toeneal, Wonger, Andrew and some of their friends, along with the Honda guys who brought a keg to lubricate the festivities. After the rollover competition and drift competition some of us headed back to the Honda paddock for dinner and you guessed it, more drinking :-)

Some drift pictures from the drift guys here...

As the night wore on I decided to head over to the drift paddock since I know those guys always know how to party it up. I was joined by one of the Honda guys on his ATV. He was in for quite a surprise...

Around 12:45 we were drinking and hanging out when we heard a car start and then stall out. Turns out some guy had gotten into the Sikky 350Z drift car (LS1 transplanted motor) and started it to drive off with it. But the car was in gear and he stalled out as it moved forward. The scene that followed was chaotic, but you can imagine about 15-20 drifters ripping the would be joy-rider out of the car and SPR security coming to see what the commotion was all about. After about 5 minutes several golf carts with local Jefferson Co. sheriffs arrived. They started investigating the situation for several minutes.

During this time one of the guys (the one with the straw hat on) decides to rest in the passenger seat of one of the carts. He's sitting there for a minute or though when one of the over-anxious police officers (the small guy in the pictures) comes over and tackles him and drags him out of the cart. Mind you he was just sitting in the cart, not going anywhere, etc. A friend of the straw hat guy see's his friend getting tackled by someone, and not realizing that its a sheriff, proceeds to pick up the sheriff :-) You know where this one is going, right?

Next thing you know another sheriff runs up and tackles both of them, sending them all in the dirt. The cops are screaming, the straw hat guy is probably too drunk to comprehend whats going on, and the cop tackler is crying, realizing who he just tackled. The cops have him down, face in the dirt, and tell him to put his behind his back. He doesn't even have chance to cross his arms and we all see a flash of lightning... TAZED! You can see the Tazer in the cops hand.

There's some chat about this on the local Drift forum as well. It was better in person to see it, but the little laser target and the long silvery tentacles of coiled wire was something to behold. At this point there were about 15 police/security there. They arrested the carjacker, the straw hat guy, and the tackler and took them all away.

After all the mayhem I ended up staying in the drift paddock, yada yada yada... Morning came early for another round of NASA racing with Andrew. For the most part an average track day. Meet some more friends of Andrew and Eric, all nice guys. Also took some more pictures of the Imola S4 that's been piquing my curiosity for gutting the A4... Here's some pics, I have high res available of everything this weekend if you want, just email me.

Til next time...

Default My race recap:

Here is my race recap. I turned a 1:22.5 ! Which was almost better than my time from last year on the fresh repave! Pretty good considering the track is all torn up now. WOO!:redspot

What a great weekend. Thanks to RRT as always for all their support and help. As well as the sleeping quarters in the trailer As much as I enjoyed the AC, the result was not fun. Apparently, a 5Gal bucket was used to collect all the water from the condenser. After Sunday's win, Musker decides it would be fun to give the GTS3 winner a bath. Luckily no one took (or at least has uploaded yet) my wet-tshirt contest pic.

<b>Sat</a>: Dayton sandbags the crap out of his practice so I drop my guard. He out-qualifies me. In the shortened race, one of our Porsche competitors got a HUGE jump on the start. However, that would not last as he went off T1. After that, it was a battle between Doug Pascarella (red M3), Michael Dayton (white M3) and me. We were having some good runs until we came up on traffic. Scratch that.. a rolling roadblock that is Harry Elam. That guy needs to learn how to drive. He gets in the middle of our race and I get stuck behind him under yellow and double yellow. He then proceeds to drive what appears to be 5/10ths.

Double yellow doesnt mean race over! Luckily it did not affect the finish since the race ended on double yellow. But if it had gone green again, I woulda been PISSED!

Sun: Dayton got me fair and square this time in qualifying. As with NASA, the line forms for qualifying about 1 hour before. I tried the opposite approach this time and may have started a new trend as now we have a line to "be last" for qual. I thought I had him, but he outqualified me.

Race was a BLAST! Dayton got a great start and was 1st. I had a good start too, but Doug gets in the way. Costa (porsche) goes by and now I find myself in 4th. Doug and Costa battle for a little when Costa goes off. Im now in 3rd and begin battling Doug. The whole time I could see Dayton pulling further ahead!!!

I finally get by Doug and have my sights set on Dayton. I slowly catch him, but dont get my break until I see lap traffic ahead. I knew if he got held up a little, Id have a shot. I eventually get closer and then Im in a battle now for 1st. Mike drives a GREAT race, but I think my HIDs got the best of him. He gets stuck behind some traffic again and I try to time a few passes. The first few were unsuccessful, but I finally made one stick. Talk about action... we had many side by side moments from T1-T5 and T9 out of T10 into the main straight.

When I got in front, I managed to get a slower car inbetween us and from there Mike was stuck Race also ended early due to a wreck.

Default you might have dropped a wheel or hit the turtles perhaps...

i just laughed when I see the camera shake and hear you screaming bloody murder.

If I were you and your car had a horn, I'd be laying on it around the track if I were following that guy :-P
