I am going to answer my own question as to the source:

I was told a set for the A6 12v engine was $209.95.

I think these guys are right ChuckH,
I have a 92 100cs, I lose about three quarts between oil changes. I put the car up on a hoist
and checked the engine. The cylinder head below the valve cover was clean, at the start of the Engine Block it was soaked in oil.

I think I may get rid of this car and look for a Turbo 5 Cyl.
