2.8 V6 : How do I remove the EGR valve? Can't get at feed pipe nuts!

I have a 1993 90S, with 98,000 miles. In colder weather, the check engine light sporadicaly illuminates, with a DTC flash code of 4433 (I think). The factory manual does not list this flash code, so I guess it is the EGR temp sensor. The car has also been pinging in the summer, and I suspect that the EGR valve, or feed pipe, or intake manifold passages are partially clogged with carbon, preventing sufficient EGR flow. I checked out the vacum lines, and the EGR vacum control solinoid, which seems OK. The EGR valve diaphram seems OK, it hold vacum. The only way I think the EGR valve can be removed is either 1) drop the exhaust downpipe from the manifold, so you can get at the feedpipe nut from below, OR 2)remove the 2 bolts that hold the EGR valve to the intake manifold, and then remove the intake manifold itself, to gain acess to the feed pipe nut at the bottom of the valve. Both seem a real pain!
BTW I have the early ECU system (MMS200), which has DTC blink code outputs. The later systems dropped this feature. (thanks Audi, who seem generally to be non-dealer service hostile)
