Default can Quattro break down?

A few months ago my roomate decided to do some cookies in about 9 inches of snow in our front yard with his BMW, he predictably got stuck and asked me to pull him out. I have an '87 4000 Quattro, and I will admit the tires were mostly bald. It was all I could do to not get stuck myself. Once I managed to get almost out of the yard with my front tires out of the snow and on our gravel driveway, no power would go to them! I just sat there with my rear tires spinning like my friends bimmer. We had another friend show up with a 90 Quattro after my failure, and he pulled him out without any effort. Is my Quattro shot?!?!
