Default Collapsed "breather" hose on 89 Q 100

I have noticed a collapsed "breather" hose on my 89 Q 100 (240K KM). It is tapered and runs in an S shape from the back of the engine below the distributer down to the right side of the engine (looking backward). Top end is about 1 inch wide to about 2inches at the other end. My mechanic tells me it is a common fault and will quickly prevent the car from starting -- real soon. I think that it has been this way for some time. Anyway OEM replacement is $ 230!!. Any suggestions to a less expensive solution? Is it really that critical and would I get any performance improvements as well?

Default Give me an Audi part number, and I'll get you the same for less than dealer price!

Usually the part number is on the piece itself.

I have sources for Audi parts, which often save me 70% off dealer prices!

Default 1 reason I hate Audi, those hoses have 2 different ends so you can use a generic hose....

and then they can charge whatever the hell the want for them!!!! I've had to replace that hose before on older Audis, and they are a costly part.

There is a metal replacement hose from Audi, to prevent future reoccurance.

Default NOT!!! I paid $90 for the metal replacement at the dealer...

...which was already a lot more than it is worth. $230 is rediculous! I got mine a couple years ago, but I'm sure they haven't gone up that much. I'm surprised yours lasted that long, or has it already been replaced before?

Default $90.00 dollars is better, but still a rip off...

I'd like to slap the **** out of whoever sets the prices on these hoses...wether it be the local dealer or factory. Audi hoses, among other things, are way overpriced...rant off
