Default Be Careful!

Many of the 90 V8's need a transmission overhaul around 100K. Auto tranny that is. It also requires specialized tools for this overhaul. My mechanic is charging $4K for that to help recover the cost of his tools. Not too many mechanics have the correct tools for the V8 transmission overhaul. If the car has already had it done, then it should be good to go! This car is very simular to the 200 series in that era. If you notice, the '91 200 TQ 20V has the same side and rear panels, just a different front end. The 5speed tranny was much better suited for the quattro, during that time, than the automatic. If this is a 5spd V8, then that is a great car. None of the tranny problems. Good luck.

Default Wonderful cars, expensive to maintain

Transmissions are a weak point, and engine parts (even tune-ups) are horribly expensive. Other than regular maintenance, very solid cars if have been taken care of in past. Watch out for accident damage, as always.

Default 5spds '91 only in US, and not immune to problems

They had an oil pump and external cooler due to the heat of the dual exhaust. Nonetheless they still fail once in a while and are almost impossible to get from junkyards. That said, they are still much more reliable than the automatics. When did Audi figure out how to make an automatic? Sometime in the mid nineties I guess.

Haven't heard many problems with the 92-97 100/A6 Auto Quattro's.

Default Didn't they have really oddball brakes?

I thought I remember reading somewhere the rotor/caliper design was very strange (caliper was installed at the INNER diameter of rotor, rather than outer). Had several problems, very expensive to work on or change out to another more generic design?

Default Yeah, UFO's

The 2-piston brakes from a 1989-90 200TQ swap right in (well, if you get the front struts too). The UFO's (you have to see them in person to understand) are good street brakes, but when they do wear out the parts are very expensive - and dealer only I believe.

Iīd really recommened to go for an model after the change 1991 (1991-1994). Audi fixed a lot of problems there. You can see if itīs a newer model simply by looking on the A/C control unit (the newer models use the one from the A4/old A6). The older models (88-90) have a lot of problems with electronics (esp. climate system). There even were some bad Automatic transmissions. They even were produced with a 5-speed manual. All the old models have the 3,6ltr-V8 w. 250hp. Itīs a big weak at low RPMīs and has a high fuel consumption. A lot of these engines die at about 200000kmīs because of timing belt failures. These engines are extremely critical with their timing belts.
Youīre better with an 4,2ltr-V8 thatīs produced since the changes 1991. You can get it with Automatic or with a 6-Speed-manual. The engine is more powerful and mor reliable than the 3,6ltr, with almost same fuel consumption...
Front brakes are a pain, Iīd recommened to convert them to tha Audi HP2-brake thatīs used in A8/S8 and the old S6. Iīd not make the conversion to the Audi 200-brake. Even if this brake is more reliable than the original UFOīs it is a bit weak for that car.
And think for: *every* repair is expensive! Bring Your car only to an Audi-Dealer that ha V8-certified mechanics, all other will just cause more Problems. The V8 is even today one of the most complex cars.
If You have further questions feel free to mail me.
